The U.S. House of Representatives voted Thursday to name the Cleveland post office in honor of Sgt. Jason Robert Harkins, who was killed in Iraq.

Harkins was a member of the U.S. Army, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division of Fort Lewis, Wash.

While serving his second tour of duty in Iraq, Harkins, 25, was killed on May 6, 2007, by a roadside bomb, along with five other members of his platoon, during combat operations in Baqouba, Iraq.

U.S Rep. Nathan Deal, R-Gainesville, introduced the resolution honoring Harkins.

"I am proud to rise today to pay tribute to Sgt. Harkins and to join my constituents of Cleveland, Georgia in naming the ‘Sgt. Jason Harkins Post Office Building,’" Deal said in remarks on the House floor.

"This honor will serve as a lasting reminder of his courage, valor and ultimate sacrifice, which he paid for our country."

Earlier this month, the House passed a similar resolution from Deal honoring Pvt. Johnathon Millican, a Lula native who also was killed in Iraq.

Harkins was a 1999 graduate of Habersham Central High School and had served in the U.S. Army Reserve for three years.

He was honored posthumously with the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Harkins is survived by his wife, Emily Renee Cook Harkins of Tacoma, Wash., his mother and stepfather, Nancy and Allen Fritchey of Cleveland, his father and stepmother, Bobby and April Harkins of Cleveland, and two brothers.

The effort to rename the Cleveland post office was endorsed in letters from Cleveland Mayor Donald Stanley and the members of the White County Board of Commissioners. Both letters were entered into the Congressional Record on Thursday.

The resolution now goes to the U.S. Senate for passage before heading to President Bush for his signature.
