In about a month, animals from Gainesville will have an easier path to a new home up north. The Hall County Animal Shelter, through its transport program, finds homes for more than 300 animals a year in northern states, including Vermont, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. But state regulations require animals, once given a clean bill of health from the veterinarian, to spend two weeks outside the kennel before making the trip. Now, the animal shelter has to find foster homes for those animals. But come mid-August, those animals will have a new temporary home in an outdoor kennel. Earlier this year, the shelter, with the help of a local Eagle Scout, Matthew Smith, coordinated the construction of a 20-kennel facility to streamline the process from Georgia to the Northeast.“We’re able to transport anywhere from 30 to 60 animals to the northern states four or five times a year,” said Mike Ledford, shelter director. “One of the regulations is before the animal can be transported out of the state, it has to be out of the shelter for two weeks.“(With the construction of the new kennel), we don’t have to contract foster homes.
