The Hall County Sheriff's Office is investigating the Sunday morning death of a child in Gainesville.

Sheriff's deputies responded at 3:30 a.m. to report of a disturbance call in the 500 block of Mountain Crest Drive.

"As they were investigating, they were approached by a frantic (woman) from a nearby residence unrelated to the disturbance call," said Sgt. Stephen Wilbanks, sheriff's office spokesman.

She told deputies and emergency medical personnel that her child was not breathing.

They ran to the woman's house to find a 2-year-old girl unconscious and unresponsive.

The child was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 3:57 a.m., Wilbanks said.

The investigation revealed that the child had been sleeping at a baby sitter's home while the mother worked a late shift.

The mother had just arrived to pick up her children when she discovered that the 2 year-old was not breathing.

"No signs of foul play or accident were immediately present at the scene, and no one else in the residence was sick or injured," Wilbanks said.

The results of an autopsy are pending.

The child's identity is being withheld pending "additional next-of-kin notifications," Wilbanks said.

Further details weren't available late Sunday.
