Don Carter State Park

Groundbreaking and dedication

When: 10 a.m. today
Where: North Browning Bridge Road, Gainesville

It's been a long time coming, but the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is finally ready to get started on a second state park on Lake Lanier.

The park will be located off North Browning Bridge Road in Gainesville and will be named for Don Carter - a Gainesville real estate executive. Carter also served on the department's board for 30 years.

The state acquired the 1,000 acre site in the late 1990s, funding for the project was budgeted in 2008 and ground will officially be broken during a ceremony at 10 a.m. today.

The park, which will be located north of the Olympic Venue off Clarks Bridge Road, features more than two miles of shoreline on the lake.

It is expected to include fishing, hunting and bird watching amenities.

Several local and state dignitaries are expected to attend the groundbreaking ceremony for Don Carter State Park, including Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle.
