Grease suspected in wastewater spill

Between 18,000 and 24,000 gallons of wastewater spilled this morning near Brenau Lake, between Lakeview Drive and Enota Drive in Gainesville.

The spill was discovered by crews from the city Public Utilities Department during routine maintenance on the sewer right-of-way. The wastewater was overflowing from a manhole and the water flowed into a tributary above Brenau Lake, according to a news release from the city.

The spill lasted about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, and crews believe the overflow was caused by a grease obstruction.

Hall County Environmental Health and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division were contacted.
