Gillsville Highway was closed at Athens Highway for part of Sunday night while authorities worked to contain a fire. No one was transported to the hospital with injuries, according to authorities.

The fire was at an Exxon Mart on the corner of Gillsville Highway and Mustang Drive and appeared to have originated in the ceiling of the convenience store, Hall County Fire Marshal Scott Cagle said.

A clerk heard “popping” and believed it was air conditioning, turned the breaker off and smelled smoke before going to the back office and encountering heavy smoke and fire, authorities said.

Firefighters contained the major damage to the convenience store, which had contents valued at approximately $80,000, according to Cagle, but a building value was undetermined as of 9 p.m. Sunday.

Cagle said the cause of the fire is under investigation but that it appears to be accidental.
