A Gainesville woman was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center on Sunday evening after her apartment was filled with smoke, officials said.
Gainesville firefighters responded to a possible fire at Norwood Apartments at 6:19 p.m. to find an apartment filled with smoke, but no fire, said Terry Poll, Gainesville Fire Department battalion chief.
"Apparently the lady in the apartment had put something on to cook and apparently feel asleep," Poll said.
Another resident of the apartment arrived home to find her Park Hill Drive apartment filled with smoke, he said. "She was able to get her out before anything serious happened."
The woman, whose name was unavailable Sunday, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center as a precaution, Poll said. "We took her to the hospital to make sure there was no problem, but she was conscious and alert when she left."
The status of the woman was not immediately available late Sunday.
