Gainesville Police identify suspect in Sunday shooting

A man allegedly forced himself into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment Sunday morning and shot a man in the torso, police said.

Gainesville Police are asking for help finding Antonio Avila, 34, the suspected shooter at the Lenox Park Apartments.

Avila forced himself into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment, assaulted the male victim, then shot him in the torso before leaving the scene,” Gainesville Police wrote on social media.

The incident took place at 7:30 a.m. in an apartment at Lenox Park Apartments, authorities said.

The victim, Benjamin Perez, was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where he was in stable condition with injuries that aren’t life-threatening, police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said.

The alleged shooter and victim “were known to each other,” he said.

Avila is a Hispanic male with brown eyes and black hair, standing 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 250 pounds. He has a tattoo on his right arm.

According to the Gainesville Police’s message, charges in the warrants include aggravated assault, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, criminal trespass, theft by taking and obstruction of an emergency call.
