Gainesville police and fire departments to host academy

The Gainesville Police and Fire departments are hosting a Public Safety Academy starting in May.

Residents interested in the 10-week course should sign up by May 17.

Classes include those on crime prevention for residents and businesses, gang and narcotics information and fire safety. Participants also will ride along with police and try suiting up in 50 pounds of fire gear. The classes are taught by officers and firefighters.

The course is open to any Hall County resident 21 and older with a clear criminal history. The class size is limited to 25.

Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30-9 p.m. May 28 through July 30.
