The Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board approved an annexation request Tuesday to build a new Family Dollar store on Atlanta Highway across the street from an existing one.

Grant Gunter, an engineer with FD Group LLC, represented the company at the hearing. The new store would go in at 420 Atlanta Highway on a 1-acre property on the west side of the highway and south of Pearl Nix Parkway.

“The Family Dollar model is going to free-standing rather than locating in shopping centers,” Gunter said.

The land under consideration has four vacant buildings that are planned for demolition. The request was approved unanimously.

“It looks like that will clean that area up,” said board member Dexter Stanley. (It will) be a real asset, too.”

The recommendation now goes to the Gainesville City Council for final approval.
