A Gainesville man riding as a passenger in a pickup truck was killed in a Wednesday morning wreck, according to authorities.

Mark Alan Vieira, 61, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

Vieira was riding with Jason Vieira, 37, of Gainesville, who was driving a Ford pickup truck around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday eastbound on Ga. 98/Maysville Road near Wilbanks Way.

Traffic in the area was stopped because of a Georgia Department of Transportation work zone.

Georgia State Patrol said a Chevrolet Equinox hit the back of the pickup truck, causing it to go off the road and overturn. Debris from the wreck hit a white BMW SUV, driven by Jeremy McCollum, 41, of Maysville, heading westbound. The damage was minimal, according to state patrol.

Martha K. Brogan, 62, of Commerce, who was driving the Equinox, was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital with serious injuries.

Jason Vieira was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with non-life-threatening injuries, and McCollum was uninjured.

State patrol said charges are expected to be filed against Brogan, and the investigation is ongoing.
