Gainesville High School was one of seven schools honored statewide on Thursday as 2010 National Blue Ribbon Schools.
The program honors schools whose students achieve at high levels or drastically improve their test scores on standardized tests. States nominate schools and federal judges select the winners.
"We knew we were a high-performing high school but now the nation has recognized us. That's special," Gainesville High School Principal Chris Mance said.
Gainesville City Schools Superintendent Merrianne Dyer credited the school's diversity and higher test scores for the recognition, as well the work of educators at the middle and elementary school levels.
"It's a celebration for our whole school system," she said.
Dyer added that the graduation rate at Gainesville High School has improved. The school also offers a high number of Advanced Placement courses, she said.
"It's a validation of the work done and it will be something that motivates everyone to keep working harder," Dyer said.
Mance assembled principals from Gainesville schools Thursday afternoon to make the announcement. This November, he will travel to Washington, D.C. where Blue Ribbon schools will be honored.
About 300 schools were recognized nationally this year.
The award has been given out annually by the U.S. Department of Education since 1982.
