Gainesville authorities investigating suspicious car fires

A woman reported someone trying to burn her vehicle to Gainesville Police, while the city fire department is investigating a separate car fire.

Gainesville Police took the first report around 5 p.m. Friday on Vineyard Way, where the woman reported finding “burnt paper in her fuel cap” of her Dodge Charger, police said.

The car was fine, Sgt. Kevin Holbrook said.

The Gainesville Fire Department is investigating a “suspicious fire” from Sunday on Ridgewood Avenue.

Spokesman Keith Smith said a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup truck was found on fire. No one was around, and the vehicle wasn’t parked in front of a house.

“One of the doors of the vehicle was left open,” Smith said.

Investigators are trying to find the truck’s owner.
