The Johnson High School volleyball team hosted a match Tuesday in honor of the school’s assistant principal who was severely injured in a car wreck in August.

Mike Adcock, assistant principal at Johnson High, is now recovering from a broken rib, a broken pelvis, a collapsed lung and a leg amputation at Emory Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta. Adcock also had a tracheotomy to prevent long-term damage to his vocal chords.

Following a six-week stay at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, the father of two children was moved to the Emory center in mid-September.

Damon Gibbs, principal of Johnson High School, said Adcock is doing great, although he’s anxious to get back to work. He said Adcock is now focusing on rehabilitating his body and regaining strength.

"He’s getting stronger every day, and we feel like it won’t be too far in the future before we’ll be making plans for him to come home," Gibbs said.

"Obviously, he’s had a lot to go through and we’re very pleased with his progress."

Adcock was en route to Johnson High School at 6 a.m. Aug. 8 when he lost control of his black Ford Explorer. He traveled 202 feet before the driver’s side of his vehicle struck a tree on Poplar Springs Road, according to a report from the Georgia State Patrol. No other cars were involved in the accident.

Gibbs said the Johnson High School volleyball team hosted a "We Love Mike Night" Tuesday.

The team played in a tournament with Flowery Branch, Chestatee and Creekview high schools.

The Johnson team donated all gate receipts to the Adcock family to help cover some of the assistant principal’s extensive medical bills. More than 300 people attended the quad match, Gibbs said.

"A large crowd came out," he said. "It was great."
