Zachary Swansey, former boys basketball coach at West Hall High School, was arrested Wednesday evening on a charge of sexual assault to a student.
Swansey was charged after an investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office. West Hall High School administrators made a complaint to the sheriff Monday after the school’s investigation about an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and a student.
A press release from the Sheriff’s Office states that investigators learned that Swansey, 27, had engaged in a consensual, sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl at the school.
Because of Swansey’s capacity as a teacher, the warrant was obtained.
Swansey was arrested at his Flowery Branch home without incident and taken to the Hall County Jail.
He appeared before a Magistrate Court judge at 2 p.m. Thursday for his first appearance, where he was granted a $5,000 conditional bond.
Swansey was not listed in the Hall County Jail as of Thursday night.
A statement from the school district said school administrators investigated rumors about a relationship between Swansey and a girl, and he was told he would be fired. He submitted a letter of resignation before leaving the school Monday.
Swansey was the head boys basketball coach for one year. He was an online learning teacher and also supervised in-school suspension at times.
