Federal money for streetscaping in limbo
Enhancement projects being reviewed under new law
0824trans
Federally funded “transportation enhancement” grants, used by communities statewide to fix up areas with what was known as “streetscaping,” such as this project along Railroad Avenue in Flowery Branch, may fade under the new two-year transportation funding law.
Transportation “enhancement” projects, once a mainstay for area communities hoping to dress up roads with sidewalks and decorative streetlights, appear to be fading under the new federal transportation law. The Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act, a 27-month transportation bill approved by Congress earlier this summer and later signed by President Barack Obama, is rolling out what it calls the “Transportation Alternatives” program. Area and state officials say they are trying to determine the full impact of the new law.
