Clermont will welcome one newcomer and one familiar face to the city council this year.

Ellen Rogers and incumbent Councilman James "Sonny" Helton were elected to fill the two available council seats.

Clermont voted at large and the highest vote-getters were elected.

Rogers topped the polls with 69 votes, followed by Helton with 58 votes. Lynn Adams, 48, trailed closely behind with 52 votes.

"I am excited," Rogers said. "I’ve never done anything like this before. I’m just happy."

Incumbent Mayor James Nix was re-elected with 85 votes.

Though Nix ran unopposed, there more than a dozen write-in votes for mayor.

Former Clermont Councilman Brad Weaver, who received four unsolicited write-in votes, said "it’s obvious that the people also wanted somebody else to run for mayor."

Clermont City Clerk Sandra Helton said there was a good turnout at the polls Tuesday.

"We had over 20 percent turnout, which is really good for Clermont," Helton said.

Rogers will be the oldest member of the city council, though she will not break any records until halfway through her term.

The oldest sitting Clermont councilman was Gaylord Kesler at 84.
