A new poll shows the two Republican candidates for governor in a dead heat for the nomination just days before Tuesday’s runoff election.

Both Nathan Deal and Karen Handel had the support of 46 percent of likely voters surveyed by InsiderAdvantage via telephone Thursday.

Of those 514 surveyed, 8 percent said they still had not decided who to vote for in Tuesday’s runoff election.

The poll has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

The poll shows Handel leading in virtually every age group, but suggests that Northeast Georgia, where Deal served as a U.S. House representative for nearly two decades, may have the highest turnout on Election Day.

The poll also shows that in metro Atlanta, where Deal was once the weaker candidate, the two candidates are statistically tied.

In a statement on the company’s website, InsiderAdvantage CEO Matt Towery said he believes the nomination will be determined in the last 48 hours.

"Clearly this race is far closer than some of the private or partisan polls which have been released might suggest," Towery said.
