A scholarship program has been established for nontraditional students in the nursing program at the University of North Georgia in honor of Niki Giradeau Holcomb, a 2012 graduate.

The first scholarship of $1,500 is set to be awarded in fall 2021.

The recipient must show financial need, and preference will be given to Gainesville residents and secondly to Hall County residents.

Those who wish to apply for the scholarship can contact the North Georgia Community Foundation for details at 770-535-7880.

Holcomb was a 1988 graduate of Gainesville High School who died of cervical cancer in 2016 at the age of 49. She worked as a labor and delivery nurse at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville and later as a nurse with HealthWell Solutions at the Hall County Family Health Clinic.

Plans call for the scholarship to be awarded annually. Donations can be sent to the North Georgia Community Foundation at 615 Oak St., Suite 1300, Gainesville, GA 30501. The check memo line can be addressed to: Niki G. Holcomb Memorial Scholarship Fund.
