A nationally renowned author and expert in parenting is hosting a workshop at Eagle Ranch this Friday that aims to simplify parenting in today’s hectic, modern world.
Dr. Joshua Straub will present “The Five Pillars of Emotionally Intelligent Kids,” which seeks to bring practical, everyday strategies to introduce and grow important relational skills and emotional resiliency in children.
“Raising kids in today’s culture is very complicated,” he told The Times. “And I believe our society makes it complicated … as it relates to the many decisions we have to make. Every product, every company wants to give your child the golden nugget to give your kids an advantage.”
But distilling the essentials of parenting down to providing “emotional safety” is what can help trigger the higher functioning parts of children’s brain “that lead to the outcomes desired,” Straub said.
Straub is the author of four books, a contributor to “The Today Show” parenting team, serves as marriage and family strategist for LifeWay Christian Resources, and is the president and cofounder of The Connextion Group, a company designed to empower marriages and families.
Straub frequently speaks to various organizations, churches, businesses and military, but this is his first time in Hall County.
Straub said Eagle Ranch is the perfect venue for him and his wife, Christi, to teach because “their heart for families and their heart for kids aligns so well with what we do.”
Eagle Ranch is one of Georgia’s largest residential children’s programs built on Christian principles.
“While the workshop is eligible for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for therapeutic professionals, we think that many parents may enjoy it – sort of like a parenting masterclass,” Eagle Ranch spokeswoman Stefanie Long said in an email.
Straub said his program hones in on what it looks like to raise emotionally intelligent kids, which he describes thusly: “The ability to know what I’m feeling, why I’m feeling that way, while being in a relationship with another person and knowing what they’re feeling, why they’re feeling that way and how my behavior is causing them to feel the way they are.”
It’s self-awareness, he added, and developing problem-solving skills, self-control and social skills in kids is critical to their success in life.
The Friday program will include four primary speaking periods of an hour and a half each, with lecture, role play and question-and-answer sessions.
