A dust explosion caused “significant damage” to a Pilgrim’s Pride chicken feed plant in Gainesville on Saturday evening, according to city fire department Division Chief Keith Smith, but no injuries were reported.
Gainesville firefighters extinguished hot spots following the explosion at the plant, which is located between Chestnut Street and Bradford Street Extension. The plant crushes corn for chicken feed.
Dust explosions result from the combustion of dust particles dispersed in the air.
Smith said firefighters returned to the scene again before midnight to put out a “flare-up” of smoldering feed.
“We do not know a damage estimate,” he added.
