A Department of Transportation worker discovered a suitcase with a skull inside when he went into the woods to relieve himself, authorities said.

A construction worker on a bathroom break in the woods along Interstate 985 on Friday discovered a suitcase containing a human skull and other bones, police said.

Gwinnett County Police received the 911 call around 11 a.m. to the area north of Buford Drive.

The Department of Transportation had begun working this month to replace damaged concrete slabs on the interstate that leads to Gainesville.

“One of the construction workers went about 80 yards into the woods to relieve himself when he found the suitcase,” Cpl. Michele Pihera wrote in a news release. “The worker came out of the woods and told his supervisor.”

Police said the suitcase appears to have been in the woods “for an extended period of time.”

“The lead detective will spend time researching missing person cases in Gwinnett County and other agencies to try to link these bones back to a specific person,” Pihera wrote.

Anyone with information is asked to call the police’s criminal investigations division at 770-513-5300 or use the anonymous Crime Stoppers tipline at 404-577-8477.

Information resulting in an arrest and indictment can lead to a reward up to $2,000.
