Clear, cool week ahead after rainy Saturday

Another day of heavy rain Saturday may be the last of the wet stuff we see for awhile.

Afternoon and evening storms dumped heavy downpours on Northeast Georgia, washing out the end of the Petit Le Mans road race at Road Atlanta.

A total of 1.39 inches of rain fell during the day, with nearly an inch measured between 4 and 6 p.m. at the National Weather Service automated recording station at Gainesville’s Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport.

But today’s forecast is for clear, sunny skies and a fall-like high temperature of 76 degrees. Skies are expected to stay clear for the next few days, with daytime highs only reaching the mid-70s and overnight lows dipping into the low 50s.

The rains continued to raise water levels at Lake Lanier. As of 8:15 p.m. Saturday, the lake was at 1,068.48 feet above sea level, about 2½ feet below full pool of 1,071 feet.
