Gainesville police are looking for two armed robbers after a Fiesta Cab driver was robbed at gunpoint Saturday.

The suspects, both described as light-skinned Hispanic men, were picked up by the driver from Wood Lake Drive and dropped off at Ridgecrest Apartments on Roper Hill Road around 4 p.m., Crime Prevention Officer Joe Britte said.

"They robbed the driver with a silver-plated handgun," Britte said. "They were able to get money from him and his cell phone."

Britte said the money amounted to about $200 cash.

He said police have not been able to track and pinpoint a location on the cell phone.

"We tried to call the dogs out and get a scent but they didn't find anything," Britte said.

Both suspects are described as between 5 foot 6 inches and 5 foot 8 inches tall and weighing between 130 and 150 pounds. One is described as being 18 years old and the second closer to 25. They were wearing blue jeans and T-shirts, Britte said.

"(The case is) open but on hold right now because there were no witnesses," he said.

Police are not releasing the cab driver's name yet but said he was not injured during the robbery.

Kevin Holbrook, public information officer for the police department, said it was unknown whether this robbery is related to another in August.

In that incident, which also occurred around 4 p.m. at Ridgecrest Apartments, 17-year-old Renardo Shonice Hawkins was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault and one count of armed robbery after allegedly pulling a handgun on and demanding money from a cab driver.
