Weight loss pays off for employees of The Longstreet Clinic
Employees of The Longstreet Clinic, P.C., recently turned almost four months of weight loss into gain — in their wallets.
Dr. Holmes B. Marchman announced the winners of TLC's 2009 Weight Loss Challenge, which began Jan. 29. The competition included 111 participants from 22 teams. Participants lost a total of 1,076 pounds, and winners were determined by the highest percentage of body weight lost.
Victoria Truelove was the competition's individual winner. She lost 15 percent of her body weight and took home a prize of $222.
"The goal was to reduce body weight in a friendly, supportive, competitive atmosphere with cash incentives," said Marchman, TLC's medical director.
The first-place team lost 10 percent of their body weight and took home $555. Members were Javonnica Scott, Karen Weekley, Kathy Dean, Paula Campbell and Dr. Richard Shelton.
The second-place prize of $333 went to the team of Gerry Brown, Katrina Swain, Marissa Arizpe, Samantha Norris and Truelove. They lost a combined 8 percent of their body weight.
Over the past five years, TLC has embarked on a multifaceted Wellness Program to enhance the health of its employees.
"Obesity is an epidemic and with this comes a plethora of health issues with long term and expensive consequences such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes," Marchman said. "With body weight reduction of 5 percent, risks for these diseases can significantly improve."
