A Buford man died after he was inflating a tire Tuesday morning and suffered a head injury, according to authorities.

Dave Key, a mechanic with the city of Buford, died after injuries sustained at the Buford Public Works Center on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

Gwinnett County Police responded after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday to the warehouse, where Key was on the ground “with a serious head injury and a large amount of blood around his body.”

A witness told police that Key mounted a new tire to a wheel and was adding air to it.

The man then heard a loud boom and saw Key falling to the ground while bleeding from the head, according to a police report.

Another witness reportedly saw Key “flipping in the air” before hitting the ground.

“(A witness) ran to get someone to call 911,” according to the report.

The medical unit transported Key to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville. Gwinnett County Police confirmed Key later died.
