The Hall County Library System is inviting all avid readers to stock up on books for as little as a dime a piece at its annual book sale this weekend.

The sale, hosted at the Gainesville branch by Friends of the Hall County Library System, is the system's biggest fundraiser of the year.

Assistant Library Director Lisa MacKinney said last year, the sale generated about $4,000.

"I think it's going to be even better this year," MacKinney said. "We have a lot of books."

Volunteers spent all week sorting boxes of books that have been collected over the past six months.

There will be all sorts of books, including children's books, fiction, nonfiction and even coffee table books.

Prices range from 10 cents to $1 and likely are to go even lower on Sunday afternoon as organizers try to sell off the remaining books.

The Friends of the Library group is a volunteer organization that serves as the fundraising and advocacy arm of the Hall County Library System.

MacKinney said the group raises money to help the libraries with needs that aren't covered by county and state funding.

"As far as I know, the Friends have done book sales as long as they've been in existence," MacKinney said.

MacKinney said in the past, the Friends of the Library group has used money from the book sale to buy computers, new books and equipment.

Last year, the money raised went toward summer programming.

"The amount that they raise just about pays for the summer reading program," MacKinney said.

MacKinney said she hopes that's the case again this year.

Extra proceeds will go toward stocking library shelves with new titles.

"It's a huge fundraiser for us," she said.
