The woman who died Saturday in a Lake Lanier boating accident was identified Sunday by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources as Becky Wallace, 55, of Suwanee.
Wallace and three children were being pulled on a tube behind a pontoon boat in the Shoal Creek area in Gwinnett County about 2:15 p.m. Saturday, DNR spokesman Rick Lavender said. The tube overturned and ejected the passengers.
She was not wearing a life jacket; the children were. Her body was recovered at the scene, Lavender said.
DNR’s Critical Incident Reconstruction Team is investigating.
It’s unknown what the woman’s relationship was to the children. It’s unknown if alcohol was a factor. Lavender said there’s no indication at this point that another vessel was involved.
Although Wallace’s death was the first of the summer season on the lake, it was the third this year, including one in January and one in February. None of the three were wearing life jackets. Ten people died in drownings and boat accidents last year.
