For stepping up in another person’s time of need, two Hall County firefighters were awarded at a breakfast organized by the American Red Cross.

Firefighter Colton Stroud and Lt. Chuck Jarrard received their honors at the organization’s Northeast Georgia Chapter’s Heroes Breakfast Wednesday.

Jarrard was given the Community Hero Award for his response during the Allen Creek Training Center accident from July that severely injured three firefighters.

Will Griffin, T.J. Elliott and Stephen Jackson fell more than 40 feet in the ladder truck’s bucket during a July 22 training accident.

“Lt. Jarrard went right up the  truck … not knowing if something else may happen and was able to take one of the personnel who was not breathing and open their airway,” said Deputy Fire Chief Chad Black.

Stroud, earning the Emergency Response Hero Award, was recognized for his help during a watercraft incident in the Towns County area, Black said.

After noticing a person in the water, Stroud started performing CPR until emergency responders arrived.

“The person ended up surviving, who of course would not have, if they hadn’t been there and he performed what he did,” Black said. “He wasn’t even on duty. He was out enjoying the day.”

“For us to have two out of only five people given awards at that, we are very proud of their accomplishments and the work they do,” Black said.
