Flowery Branch is hosting a silent auction Saturday to fund its Shop With a Cop program benefiting needy children.

The auction runs through the city’s Christmas festival, with the proceeds going toward buying presents for disadvantaged Flowery Branch children.

Items up for auction include a two-hour sailboat ride around Lake Lanier for four people, as well as a “Waffle House at Your House” item, where breakfast will be made for up to 10 people at the winner’s home.

The Christmas festival begins at 2 p.m., with the parade lineup 30 minutes prior.

Sergeant attempts to break his world record for charity

A Hall County Sheriff’s Office sergeant is attempting to break his own record on Dec. 13 in an effort to raise money for the Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes.

In one hour, Greg Cochran will attempt to flip a 555-pound tire at least 204 times in an effort for the charity benefiting children needing a home.

Cochran set the “most tire flips in one hour using a 555-pound tire” record in November 2010 with 203 flips.

The charity receiving the proceeds helps more than 80 children across five different youth homes, supporting kids who have been abused, neglected or abandoned.

The funds will come from plates of ribs sold at the event for $14. The “Meet and Eat” will be at the Texas Roadhouse from 6-8 p.m in Gainesville. Monday.

Cochran has spent more than 23 years in the fitness industry, setting multiple world records. In 2011, he set the record for “most 50 foot truck pulls in one hour” after moving a 5,300-pound truck 27 times in Gainesville.

The event will be at the Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 13, at the corner of Shallowford and Skelton roads in Gainesville.
