Authorities: Murrayville man shot, killed woman
John Harol Whitfield

A Murrayville man shot a woman to death on Nov. 29, according to warrants in the case.

John Harol Whitfield, 52, was arrested at a Clermont home Saturday, four days after authorities say he shot Wanda Kay McDougald with a .45 caliber firearm. Her body was found Sunday in the woods along Ga. 60 north of Dahlonega, about 1 mile south of the Union County line.

Lumpkin County Magistrate Court denied bond on Monday for Whitfield, who faces charges of murder and aggravated assault.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles said Sunday that Whitfield and McDougald “lived together for over a year.”

The Lumpkin County and Hall County sheriff’s offices and GBI found McDougald early Sunday, authorities said.

Whitfield, who had been reported missing by a family member on Nov. 30, remains in the Lumpkin County Jail.
