Brenau University’s Shequonna Holden takes a packet from the top of a stack of critical thinking assessment tests Wednesday afternoon as the class of freshman gets set for the challenge.
For many students, the first year of college comes as a shock. Balancing schoolwork with life, keeping up with difficult academic demands and just trying to pay the bills can create a heavy burden, and more than 35 percent of first-time, full-time freshmen don’t enroll for a second year at the same school. Some of those transfer to other schools, but many decide it’s not the right time for college, or just give up altogether.
