The front seat passenger killed in a one-vehicle wreck New Year’s Day in South Hall County was identified Sunday as 28-year-old Maurice Barry of Clanton, Ala.

His identity had been withheld pending notification of the family.

The driver, Quentian Jesse Nixon, 28, of Jacksonville, Fla., also was killed.

They were traveling southbound on Interstate 985 when the 2008 Volkswagen Jetta that Nixon was driving “failed to maintain its lane of travel,” Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Anthony Coleman has said.

The Jetta left the road and struck a tree at 5:10 a.m. near the Friendship Road exit.

Neither of the deceased were wearing seat belts, and they were entrapped in the vehicle, Coleman said.

A back seat passenger, Lakeisha Young, 22, of Gainesville suffered serious injuries and was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Her status wasn’t known Sunday.

Coleman said the cause of the wreck was unknown and pending following completion of the investigation.
