Some serious spelling went on Tuesday in Hosch auditorium at Brenau University. The 25th annual Great Grown-Up Good Time Romp of a Spelling Bee had its light moments — thanks to the “wordsmith,” Gay Hammond — but the end was a bit tense. The annual event benefits the Gainesville Hall-County Alliance for Literacy, and “The Circuit Riders” from Gainesville First United Methodist Church — Ruth Bruner, Sheila McCleary and Pat Harrell — defended their championship, beating “Look It Up” from Hall County Library — Amanda Adams, Charles Rozier and Susan Stehlin.
