$20K in hives, equipment stolen from Lula beekeeper

More than 100 hives and beekeeping equipment worth a combined $20,000 were stolen from a Lula man’s property.

Don Kuchenmeister went through his commercial operation Sunday, May 13, on Ashley Brook Drive to document the extent of the theft. A beekeeper with the nickname “The Fat Bee Man,” Kuchenmeister has more than 35 years of experience as a commercial beekeeper and runs Dixie Bee Supply.

“Each box of bees, just the bees alone, is $175 per box,” he said.

Kuchenmeister said he was sleeping when he believes a group of people with a truck pulled up to the hives. He believes whoever took the hives and equipment will probably try to resell them.
