Two people were injured Monday morning when a Jeep rolled over after it crashed with a Gainesville school bus.

Amy Richardson, 37, of Cumming was driving the Jeep east on E.E. Butler Parkway at about 8 a.m. when Sgt. Anthony Coleman with the Georgia State Patrol said she ran the red light and hit the school bus as it attempted to cross E.E. Butler on Summit Street.

“The driver stated that the sun was real bright in (her) face, (and she) didn’t see the traffic signal change colors,” Coleman said.

Richardson and the driver of the bus, Susan Jarrard, 61, of Gainesville, were taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center where they were treated and released.

Coleman said Richardson was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device.

Five children were on the bus, which serves Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy, but none were injured.

Jerry Castleberry, transportation director for the school system, said the bus received considerable damage to its front end and will have to be pulled from service to be repaired.

A spare wheelchair-enabled bus will be used in the meantime, he said.
