2 from Gainesville killed in car wrecks

ent in Athens, one week after a soldier from Gainesville was killed in a wreck in Killeen, Texas.

Matthew Joel Trotter, 24, lost control of his Toyota Tundra about 3 a.m. Thursday on Will Hunter Road near the Milledge Avenue intersection, Athens-Clark Police spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow said.

Trotter was driving through a curve when the truck crossed the center line and skidded, going off the shoulder of the road and hitting several trees, Sorrow said. He was pronounced dead at St. Mary’s Hospital.

On March 27, U.S. Army Spc. Eric Willis Mooney, 26, died from injuries sustained in a car accident near Fort Hood in Killeen, officials said.

Killeen police said Mooney was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry at about 7:25 a.m. when the car drove over a median and into oncoming traffic, The Austin American-Statesman reported. Police told the newspaper Mooney was trying to get the car back over the median when it was struck in the driver’s side by a concrete pumping truck.

Mooney was a graduate of Gainesville High School and is survived by his wife, Emily Mooney; parents Larry and Sherree Mooney of Gainesville; two brothers; and a sister.

Funeral services for Mooney are scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
