A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized after being shot by a 16-year-old boy late Saturday night on Floyd Road, officials said.

The 12-year-old was shot in the leg with a handgun, according to Maj. Terry Conner of the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

Conner said the 16-year-old suspect fled from the scene of the shooting shortly after midnight.

A juvenile matching the suspect’s description was caught at about 7 p.m. Sunday near Harmony Church Road, said sheriff’s Lt. Brian Pearson.

Pearson said the juvenile would be booked into the Regional Youth Detention Center in Gainesville until he could appear before a Juvenile Court judge.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he received treatment for the injury. He was released Sunday evening.

The incident remains under investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
