Fifteen rising freshmen or basic cadets recently completed Camp Dragon, a summer training camp for Air Force Junior ROTC cadets at Jefferson High School.

The Hall County Optimist Club recently awarded the first Holcomb Family Education Scholarship to Michelle Pope.

Established through the North Georgia Community Foundation, the scholarship seeks to recognize a young person from Hall County or Gainesville city public schools who intends to pursue a career in education.

Pope of East Hall High School plans to attend North Georgia College & State University to study early childhood education.

Kyle Chewning of Gainesville has been named to the dean's list for the 2009 spring semester at Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn.

To qualify, students must earn a grade-point average of at least 3.6 with no grade below a C and be enrolled full time. Chewning is the son of Wayne and Kimberly Chewning of Gainesville.
