For the last four decades, the Chattahoochee Baptist Association has made sure underprivileged Hall County students get the opportunity to experience what a lot of kids take for granted — summer camp. The camp, called Camp Hope, is held at the Georgia Baptist Assembly in Toccoa.

"This will be our 46th consecutive year for this camp. We have one week of camp for girls and one week for boys," said Mike Walston, church and community director of the Gainesville-based association.

"The kids get to go for free, so we have to raise the money. It costs about $200 per child."

The group’s main fundraiser for the camp is the annual 5K Run/Walk for Camp Hope, which will be held Saturday at West Hall High School, 5500 McEver Road, Oakwood.

Registration opens at 10:30 a.m. the day of the race, with a 1 mile fun run at 11 a.m., and the 5K run/walk at 11:30 a.m.

The registration fee is $25 per person on the day of the race.

Even if you are unable to participate in the actual race, you still have the opportunity to help support Camp Hope. For the first time this year, the association has created a "phantom runner" category, for individuals who’d like to show their support by paying the registration fee, but who do not want to actually run or walk the race’s course.

The association’s camp is open to students who have completed first through fifth grades. Students spend one week at the Christian faith-based camp participating in a number of activities like daily Bible studies, swimming, music and crafting.
