In bloom
You know its spring not by the weather or the time change, but by the flowers popping up everywhere

As the weather warms, North Georgia plants come out of their winter slumber and show off with a bevy of blooms.

Elaine Kelley, a Master Gardener and owner of the Potting Shed Nursery in Flowery Branch, said one of her favorite combinations this time of year is forsythia, with its bright yellow blossoms, and flowering quince.

"They bloom at the exact same time and it’s a bold color contrast," she said. "They look great planted together."

She said the most popular plant she sells right now is a perennial called euphorbia, which also blooms during the spring. This plant has blossoms called bracts, like a poinsettia plant, which last for a long time, she said.

"And the plant is evergreen, so it looks like a pretty little evergreen shrub (in the winter)," Kelley said. "The main thing I like about them is when you look out across a perennial garden, it doesn’t look so bad when things die back in the winter. It’s one of the few evergreen perennials."

But until we have to worry about putting our gardens to bed for another season, it’s time to wake them up. Bloom on, little plants. Bloom on.
