Kathy Strickland, a history teacher at Johnson High School, recently welcomed retired Vietnam veteran Mackie Etris and World War II veteran Jack Blackwell to an event teaching students the significance of Veterans Day.

Johnson High School recently hosted veterans including World War II veteran Jack Blackwell, retired Vietnam veteran Mackie Etris and former U.S. Marine Rudy Gerraro.

These veterans were interviewed by the Johnson High School broadcasting team and visited classrooms throughout the day. The event helped students learn the significance of Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

Katherine Storms of Blairsville recently graduated from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y., with an associate degree.

North Georgia College & State University in Dahlonega claimed the top prize Nov. 7 in the U.S. Army Cadet Command Bold Leader Challenge, an event that pitted teams from the nation's six senior military colleges in a 15-mile military skills competition that tested physical endurance and teamwork. Two teams from North Georgia competed in the event and took first place and fourth place. As winners of the Bold Leader Challenge, North Georgia College & State University will represent 1st Brigade at the Sandhurst competition in April.
