The Jackson County Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Squadron 148 of the Georgia Wing, Group V, was represented at the recent Braselton Festival at Braselton Park.

The Color Guard led the Fourth of July Parade at days end before the fireworks. Besides leading events such as the Braselton Festival, they also present the colors during the national anthem at various public events such as the Gwinnett Braves Memorial Day game at Coolray Field.

Cadet Master Sergeant Rebecca Ensley recently was the first cadet from Squadron 148 to win the Cadet of the Quarter Award and Cadet Chief Master Sergeants Andrew Patterson and James Ensley are about to receive the Mitchell Award, one of the highest awards that CAP has to offer.

The Jackson County CAP squad is a composite unit and welcomes both cadets (12 and over) and senior members (adults), with a wide variety of interesting, challenging and rewarding opportunities to serve their country as well as the local community for both cadets and adults.

Three area students were recently awarded with the 2010 Coleman Natural Foods Annual Scholarship. The recipients are as follows:

$1,000 award:

Jessica Anderson

, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Michael Anderson, Dahlonega. Anderson volunteered at local nursing homes and assisted living facilities and will be starting her freshman year at Brenau majoring in math and science.

$500 awards:

James King

, son of Russell King, Commerce. King will continue business management this fall after summer interning in the music industry.

Maria Espinoza

, daughter of Hilda Diaz of Gainesville. Espinoza will continue her early childhood education credits this fall.

 

Gateway Domestic Violence Center has received a $1,000 grant from the Wells Fargo Volunteer Service Award program. The award recognizes the contributions Wells Fargo Advisors employees make in their communities.

Kelly Lee

, who serves as Gateway Domestic Violence Center’s Board President and is employed by Wells Fargo Advisors, was selected as a Volunteer Service Award winner. In her honor, Wells Fargo has donated a $1,000 award to Gateway Domestic Violence Center.

Gateway Domestic Violence Center provides comprehensive support services, emergency shelter, transitional housing and legal advocacy for victims of domestic violence and their children.
