Gainesville's oldest community chorus, the Voices of North Georgia, will perform its annual Christmas concert Friday and Saturday.

"Upon this Christmas Night" will be presented at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 404 Washington St.

"Something I never miss is the Voices of North Georgia concert," said Frances Steedley, staff member at St. Paul's. "There is a small orchestra accompanying them. It's absolutely wonderful."

The Voices of North Georgia is a chorus of 45 singers consisting of former music majors and folks who love to sing.

Jean McCorlew, hospitality and membership chairperson for Voices, said the chorus has been in existence for 43 years. It's annual Christmas concert has been held at St. Paul the last few years.

"The first portion will be the Christmas portion of Handel's ‘Messiah,'" McCorlew said, "It will be the full Christmas portion and it's the first time we've done the full portion in a long time."

The second half of the program will be a combination of sacred and secular music.

McCorlew said some songs people might not be familiar with, but there will be Christmas favorites.

"We are doing ‘Carol of the Bells,' excerpts from the ‘Polar Express,'" she said.

There will be an intermission during the 90-minute performance. A reception will follow Friday, and is included in the ticket price.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to get the Christmas season off to a joyous start," McCorlew said.
