Based on the 1992 film, “Sister Act” will entertain Gainesville audiences with its musical numbers and comedy June 29 through July 2.
Sponsored by Gainesville Parks and Recreation, the Pam Ware Summer Community Theatre will perform “Sister Act” at 7:30 p.m. in the Gainesville High School Performing Arts Theater, 830 Century Place, Gainesville.
Tickets are $17 for adults and $12 for students and seniors. They may be purchased at Gainesville Parks and Rec office inside the Gainesville Civic Center at 830 Green St. in Gainesville or at the door.
“Sister Act” will feature original music by Tony- and eight-time Oscar winner, Alan Menken. He was the man responsible for “Newsies,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Little Shop of Horrors.” And the songs in the musical were nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
“The local talent is this show is unbelievable, and these actors have done amazing job recreating this well know box office and Broadway hit,” said Julie Butler Colombini, marketing and communications manager for Gainesville Parks and Recreation.
In the story, Deloris Van Cartier witnesses a murder and is put in protective custody in the one place the cops are sure she won’t be a found: a convent. Disguised as a nun, Van Cartier finds herself at odds with the rigid lifestyle and uptight Mother Superior.
Using her unique disco moves and singing talent to inspire the choir, Van Cartier breathes new life into the church and community. But this outreach causes her to blows her cover. Soon, a gang chases her down, only to find Van Cartier and the power of her newly found sisterhood.
