Characters ranging from pop-culture icons to those who lived in another era may be seen running around downtown Gainesville for fun.

The Dash Through the Decades 5-kilometer race or 1 mile walk or run will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at 2 Dog Restaurant, 317 Spring St. SE, in Gainesville.

Participants are encouraged to dress up in outfits from their favorite decades or other characters.

Strollers and well-behaved, vaccinated dogs on a leash are welcome to participate in the 1-mile run. Owners should ensure their dogs are well-conditioned and are responsible for the cleanup of any waste.

Prizes will be awarded to the best adult and child costumes. Medals will be given to the top three finishers in all age categories.

Registration costs $30 for the 5K for adults 18 and older and $25 for youth 17 and younger. To run the 1-mile race, it is $10 for children 13 younger or $20 for those 14 and older.

Proceeds will benefit the Family Life Center ministry at First Baptist Church.
