If you've ever wanted to participate in a duathlon or triathlon, here is your chance. For the second year the Toccoa YMCA is hosting a duathlon and triathlon event Aug. 27 as part of the Y Tri Series.

There are several different options designed to best fit the wishes and ability of the racers, according to Jennifer Stelmack, race director and aerobics instructor at the Toccoa YMCA.

"The courses are appropriate for people of different abilities and skill levels," Stelmack said. "It's not about the times you post; all that really matters is that you finish."

For the truly seasoned athletes, there are two triathlon courses, one long and one short.

The long course consists of a 1,500-meter swim, a 24-mile bike ride and a 10-kilometer run. The short tri course includes a 500-meter swim, 15-mile bike ride and a 5K run.

Racers can also choose to forgo the swimming and instead take part in the duathlon events. Again there are long and short routes.

The long course begins with a one-mile run, followed by 24 miles on the bike and then a 10K run to finish. The short duathlon course contains a mile run, 15 miles by bike and then a 5K.

"Participants can also choose to break it up by doing a relay team. The relay teams are particularly good for those who are still in the beginner stages of training and fitness," Stelmack said.

Stelmack said that the event was started last year to honor Lainie Weade, a friend and co-worker who passed away four years ago after fighting breast cancer.

"Lainie always wanted to do stuff like this. I think it's a really good way to honor and remember her. It's everything she stood for," she said.

According to Stelmack, last year's races drew 188 participants. Organizers are hoping to get 250 signed up this year.

Registration costs vary by event. Stelmack encourages participants to sign up early. Early registration for the event is available at the series website, www.ytriseries.com.

Short course early registration is $50 for individuals and $90 for relay teams. Long course prices are $60 for individuals, and $100 for relay teams.

The race will begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. Participants can choose to stay overnight the previous evening at the venue or arrive early the morning of the event.

Racers will meet at the Georgia Baptist Conference Center at 8496 Lake Louise Road in Toccoa.
