The silliest ping pong tournament in Georgia returns for a second year to the historic Sautee Nacoochee Center Gymnasium.

The Sautee Nacoochee Invitational Ping Pong Tournament is a theatrical event slated for May 15 and 16. Not only will there be ping pong, players are encouraged to bring their alter egos and invent characters with imaginary "back stories."

Players of all skill levels may compete, and the tournament is played by the rules of social pingpong as opposed to professional table tennis.

Registration is required no later than Wednesday, May 13. The cost is $20 per registered player.

On Thursday night, a draw will determine the brackets. On Friday night, an opening ceremony will introduce the teams and judges and individual tournament play will begin.

Players may join one of the four teams: the Narwhals, the Razorboars, the Cranes or the Largemouths. Points will be awarded for both winning play and team spirit.

Spectators, who may watch for free, may gain points for the team of their choice through imaginative cheering. Some costumes will be available onsite.

Everyone is invited to be creative with their team-wear. Team T-shirts are available for purchase.

New this year will be a youth tournament called the Sautee Nacoochee Adolescent Ping Pong Players. Registration is $3 per player. The quarter, semifinals and finals are set for Saturday.

Trophies will be awarded to the individual champion and the teams in the closing ceremony Saturday night. Teams will be judged on spirit, participation in the theatrical elements, costumes and style in trash-talking. Team competition is really not affected by actual game scores. Teams win for theatricality, players win for skill.

Beer, wine, soft drinks and food available on site during the tournament. King of Pops popsicles will be sold on Friday night, King Cheese gourmet grilled cheese will be available Saturday.
