Turning the rhythmic tales of Dr. Seuss into songs is the basis of the musical “Seussical.” And Piedmont College Theatre is bringing the rhyming tunes to Demorest.
Adults and children can experience the adventures of Horton, a tender-hearted and friendly elephant, with narrations from The Cat in the Hat.
Horton will explore the world of Dr. Seuss with a young girl, Jojo, who gets in trouble for thinking too many “thinks.” Filled with zany characters, the Cat in the Hat will take audience members and Jojo through many Seuss books.
“Dr. Seuss was in his den writing the books that changed children’s literature forever during the tumultuous 1960s,” director Kathy Blandin said, explaining the production is heavily influenced by the culture and aesthetic of 1960s America. “Seuss became a part of the ‘hippie generation’ by advocating for peace, love and harmony in his stories. Our production will pay homage to this fact by drawing upon the psychedelic art movement and pop culture icons of the times.”
Performances of “Seussical” will be at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 17–19; and 2 p.m., Nov. 20, in the Swanson Center Black Box Theatre at 365 College Drive in Demorest.
Tickets are $5. Piedmont College faculty, staff, and students are admitted free. Tickets may be ordered at piedmont.edu/fa or by calling 706-778-8500 ext. 1355.
