Georgia may be famous for its peaches, but the city of Cornelia will be celebrating New Year’s Eve by focusing on another fruit. On Saturday, from 10 p.m. to midnight, the city will host the Eighth Annual Apple Drop. The New Year’s Eve event will be held in the parking lot of the McDonalds on Highway 441 in Cornelia. There will be live music and other activities. This will be a family-friendly, alcohol-free event. Children younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The star of the celebration is a fitting one, since Cornelia is known as "The Home of the Big Red Apple." A 5,200 pound replica of the fruit sits atop an eight-foot pedestal in downtown Cornelia. The apple monument was constructed in 1925 and was donated to the city by Southern Railway.
